Nicole's Singing Story
Nicole aims to bring her main musical influences from childhood - sounds of Peter, Paul & Mary, Simon & Garfunkel, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Norah Jones, Sarah Mchlachlan and Jewel - from years of choir in middle and high school, and from the past 4 years singing at open jams at jazz and R&B clubs in NYC, as well as busking on the streets of America (from NYC to Sedona, AZ, to Santa Monica, Venice Beach and Hollywood BLVD, LA, El Prado of Balboa Park in San Diego, to Honolulu and the beaches of Maui) together with her mindfulness/healing trainings to create melodic, symphonic/orchestral and healing music in the future. Nicole is still a novice songwriter, but now working on her first full album with a guitarist from Maui, HI and has many other incomplete works with other musicians met in her travels.
For about 15 years, throughout college and during the 10 years that Nicole was living and working in a Korean Taoist organization, Nicole barely sang at all and forgot about her dream to be a professional singer; but was instead writing into her deep unconscious about the inspiration from the poetry, emotions and melodic sounds of indie artists such as Joanna Newsom, Devotchka, The Tallest Man on Earth, and Laura Marling, as well as the contagious beats of bachata, merengue and reggaeton, and the depth of chakra healing produced from hours of ancient Chinese chanting. It wasn't until Covid-19 hit, when everything shut down, that her passion for singing and her desire to learn about her own ability to create music surfaced. She joined an adult-ed group singing class at Juilliard Extension in NYC for 1 year and everything unfolded from there...
Nicole grew up in Northern NJ right outside of New York City, studied cultural anthropology and psychology in college and lived and worked with a Korean Taoist and mindfulness training organization for 10 years. She spent a significant amount of time traveling and practicing holistic healing throughout the US; significantly in Sedona, AZ where she got trained in the art of playing Himalayan Singing Bowls, and recently found her best self in the tropical climate of Maui, HI. She personally healed from a 15 year struggle with mental illness including medicated anxiety, depression, chronic insomnia, an eating disorder, mood disorder (bipolar disorder type 2), and social phobias from the age of 14. Lots of stories to tell from that...
